Betty Loveless Murray was born November 18, 1938, and passed to be with the Lord on Friday, May 29, 2026. She was the eldest child of Elbert and Ruby Loveless, born in Heflin, Alabama. She and her four siblings—Charles, Eldridge “Lee,” Jennette, and Roger—grew up on a working farm.
She later moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a fingerprint specialist. She received a commendation from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover for her attention to detail and her assistance on a case.
Throughout her life, Betty held many roles, each reflecting her strong work ethic and caring heart. She worked as a foster mother, seamstress, assembly line worker, small business engineering supply owner, traveling volleyball “road mom,” customer service representative, hotel kitchen cook, and—her favorite role—a proud “granny nanny.”
Her faith was central to her life and kept her deeply involved in church, where she met the love of her life, her husband, Melvin Murray. Together they built a life and raised four children: Monte Murray, Melody Murray, Laryssa Wright, and Krista Dalton. Through marriage, she gained a daughter-in-law, Shannon Murray, and sons-in-law, Leslie Wright and Samuel Dalton. She was blessed with four grandchildren: Lessa Murray, Annee Dalton Meek, Gillian Murray Loob, and Erin Dalton Bolton. Through marriage, she welcomed additional family members: Cori Helgason, Landon Meek, Tristen Loob, and Isaac Bolton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings except one brother; her loving husband; and her eldest daughter.
Betty remained active in both her faith and her life. She loved reading her Bible, working in her yard, and tending to her garden and flowers. She was an avid bird watcher, an animal lover, and a gifted storyteller who always had a story to tell. Charity-minded, she supported many organizations—from Native American ministries to orphanages to local food and clothing pantries—and served many times as a chairperson in her church communities. She was a talented cake decorator, a prolific baker, and a wonderful cook, always finding ways to feed and care for those she loved. She gave sincere advice and guidance, often through stories drawn from her own life. She never let her age define or limit her—she often said she planned to live to be 100 years old.
She may have been called home sooner than she planned; however, she was not afraid. Her greatest wish was to see as many loved ones as she could and say goodbye to those she could not. If she were here today, she would want everyone to know that she is happy and at peace. We will miss her deeply, because she was—and always will be—an amazing person, sibling, partner, mother, grandmother, and friend. May she rest in peace, knowing she is loved and deeply missed.
