David Charles Canon, born August 31, 1947, in Sherman, Texas, passed away peacefully at home in Mansfield, Texas, on July 11, 2026. A devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, faithful friend, and respected professional, David’s life is remembered with gratitude and admiration by all who knew him.

From his earliest years, David displayed both academic promise and steadfast character. He attended Sherman High School and went on to pursue higher education at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1970. His pursuit of knowledge did not stop there; he later obtained a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Texas in Arlington in 1978, a testament to his dedication and ambition.

David began his accomplished career at Dallas Power and Light in 1970 where he was the benchmarking analytics manager. In this role, he established strategic partnerships between North American and international electric utilities, leaving a meaningful mark on the industry. After his official retirement in 2008, David continued to share his knowledge as a consultant for First Quartile. His pioneering spirit was evident in his authorship of the Canon Chart for First Quartile—a tool that continues to serve the company today.

David was admired not only for his professional achievements but for the honor and integrity he brought to his work. He was awarded the distinction of TXU Fellow in 2006, an honor reserved for those who make truly distinguished contributions to the company—a reflection of the respect he earned from colleagues throughout his career. His sense of service extended beyond his profession into his community. David served on the board of the local Mansfield charity The Battle of the Nines, embodying his generous spirit and commitment to helping others. As President of the Men's Tennis Association, he fostered camaraderie and sportsmanship, bringing together neighbors and friends through his love of tennis.

David’s family was the center of his world, and his devotion to them was unwavering. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Kay, who he married in 1974, and they had a loving 52 year marriage together. their sons Matthew David and Travis Key, daughters-in-law Lindsey and Laura, cherished grandchildren Walker, Zoe, Thomas, and Riley, and adored great-grandchildren June and Margo. David’s sister, Dorothy Davis, also survives him, treasuring many shared memories. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Canon; his father, Rochelle Canon; his mother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth; and his father-in-law, Phillip Causey.

Faith and fellowship were constants in David’s life; he was a faithful member of First Methodist Church, finding joy, strength, and purpose in his community there. David’s passions were many and varied. He delighted in traveling with Mary Kay, exploring new places and creating memories together. He was an avid golfer and tennis enthusiast, always eager for a friendly match. Among his fondest memories were trips snow skiing on Mt. Crested Butte and snowmobiling through the breathtaking landscape of Yellowstone. Perhaps most of all, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren, finding happiness in their company and sharing in their milestones.

A memorial service honoring David's life will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at First Methodist Church Mansfield, located at 777 North Walnut Creek Drive, Mansfield, TX 76063. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by David are invited to celebrate his remarkable life and lasting legacy.
