Ed Bowden

July 5, 1938 — May 22, 2025

Mansfield

Edgar Allen Bowden, age 86, passed away on May 22, 2025, in Mansfield, Texas.

Ed was born on July 5, 1938, to Edgar Gregory Bowden and Dorothy Evelyn Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was raised in River Oaks, Texas.

Ed served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1962, with two years of active duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex as an Aerographer’s Mate and four years in the Naval Reserve.

Ed married Mary Ellen Dean in 1959, and the couple had five children together.

Ed graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1968. He was an Electrical Engineer for 10 years at LTV before becoming a Research Engineer at Mobil Oil Research and Development Corporation. Ed worked at Mobil Oil for more than 20 years, where he received 13 U.S. patents for inventions related to oil exploration and oil field development.

Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, especially taking family vacations in New Mexico, Colorado, and the mountainous regions of the Western United States. Ed was fascinated with the geology of the mountains. Ed was very creative, a continuous learner, and was constantly inventing and creating a wide range of gadgets using his in-depth knowledge of engineering. Ed was “an engineer’s engineer.” He loved listening to a wide variety of music but particularly enjoyed classical music. Ed also enjoyed woodworking and creating with his children and grandchildren.

Ed’s family and friends will always remember him as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and as a deacon of 36 years within the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth. He always had a huge smile and bear hugs for all he met. Ed always took a keen interest in his family and friends’ accomplishments; he was always available to lend a hand and oƯer encouragement to others. Ed was forever clever and loved to laugh and explore new languages, even making up his own words at times to entertain and provide humor to his family and friends. He held his friends and family close to his heart and always made time for them. Ed was generous with his knowledge and eager to share with anyone showing interest.

Ed is preceded in death by his first wife Mary Ellen, his parents, sister Mary Katherine Bowden, son Andrew Aaron Bowden, and son Christopher Allen Bowden.

He is survived by his second wife Roswitha Long (married in 2018), daughters Michele Bowden, Angela Berger (Matt), and Elizabeth Dreiling (David), step son Roger Long (Cori), step daughter Christa Weatherby, as well as three granddaughters, three step granddaughters, two step grandsons, one great granddaughter, two great grandsons, and one step great granddaughter.
