John Rich Durham Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted public servant, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, in Mansfield, Texas. He was 79 years old.
Born on July 20, 1946, in Greensboro, North Carolina, John was the cherished son of John Rich Durham Sr. and Margaret Weisner Durham. Raised in Greensboro, he cultivated the strong work ethic, quick wit, and generous spirit that would become the cornerstones of his character throughout his life.
John answered the call to serve his country with honor and pride, dedicating four years to the United States Air Force from March 1966 to February 1970. After completing his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career as a Computer Technician with Xerox Corporation, where his skill and dedication shone for more than 25 years. Not content to rest on his laurels, John later devoted over a decade to safeguarding the public as a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Agent at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
In October 1967, John married the love of his life, Virginia Durham. Their partnership spanned nearly six decades, providing a foundation of love and support that nurtured their family. Together, they raised two children: William Harold Durham and Christine Durham-Muh. John’s pride and joy extended to his seven grandchildren—Ashley Durham, Stephen Durham, Kathryn Keller, Courtney Moore, Lacey Durham, Sarah Muh, and Paul Muh—as well as his four great-grandchildren: Hunter Durham, Granger Durham, Madelyn Moore, and Jaxon Moore.
John embraced life with a remarkable enthusiasm and a boundless curiosity. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing soccer and was an avid fan of action movies. His passions broadened into gardening, woodworking, and working with computers — pursuits through which he expressed his creativity and patience. Whether tending to his garden, crafting something with his hands, or assisting friends and family with their technical troubles, John approached every task with warmth, humor, and an unwavering willingness to help.
Those who had the privilege of knowing John remember him as a man filled with laughter and generosity. His quick wit and wisecracks brought joy to countless gatherings, and his kindness left a profound impact on all fortunate enough to cross his path. The legacy he leaves behind is one of hard work, devotion to family, and an enduring spirit of generosity.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John Rich Durham Sr. and Margaret Weisner Durham, as well as his sister, Pegi Maudlin.
His family, friends, and all whose lives he touched will cherish his memory and carry forward the values he so deeply embodied.
