Juan "DJ Unk" Valdez

Juan Antonio "Ditto" Valdez, age 54, passed away on December 30, 2025. Born on March 20, 1971, in Del Rio, Texas, Juan later made his cherished home in Mansfield, Texas, where he became a beloved figure in the community.

Juan was well known and deeply respected in the Tejano music community, where many affectionately knew him as DJ Unk through Midwest Tejano Radio. His passion for music was palpable, and his dedication to the cultural legacy of Tejano music inspired countless listeners. With his warm personality and generous spirit, Juan left a lasting impression not only on his audience but also on friends and fellow DJs alike.

He is survived by his loving family: his sister Rosa “Rosie” Maria Barrera and her husband Rogelio Barrera of Lewisville, Texas; their children Gabriel Barrera and wife Tina Barrera, Andres Barrera, Izaac Barrera, Jay Barrera and wife Chelsea Barrera with their children; and Aaron Lee Barrera and wife Melissa Chavez-Barrera of Little Elm, Texas. Additionally, he is survived by his brother-in-law Patricio “Pichie” Contreras III of Mansfield, Texas; his niece Kelsey Clarice Contreras Coombs and her son Zayden Asher Coombs of Mansfield, Texas; and his nephew Patricio “Patrick” Valdez Contreras IV and wife Amber Calnan of Midlothian, Texas, along with their sons.

Juan was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Beatriz Valdez, who hailed from Del Rio, Texas; his sisters Socorro “Coli” Tarin of Del Rio, Texas, and Antonieta “Tonie” Valdez Contreras of Mansfield, Texas; and his aunt Sara Andrade of Del Rio, Texas.

A Celebration of Life honoring Juan Antonio Valdez will be held on Saturday, January 10, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Blessing Funeral Home, located at 401 Elm Street, Mansfield, TX 76063.

Juan will always be remembered for his love of music, his generous spirit, and the joy he instilled in so many lives. His legacy will endure through the cherished memories he created and the family and community who loved him dearly.
