Lovingly remembered for her early morning devotionals and her passion for caring for the most vulnerable, especially children and animals, Lorraine Ardith Valdes passed away at the vibrant age of 96 on July 30, 2026, in Mansfield, Texas. Born to Bonnie May (Brown) and Arthur Roper in Los Angeles, California, on May 17, 1930, Lorraine spent the first several months of her life with her mother at the Bide-A-Wee Home. Although she spent many of her early years in an orphanage and later a convent, Lorraine never lost her hopeful outlook on life. Instead, those experiences deepened her compassion and shaped a lifetime devoted to caring for others.
As a young mother, Lorraine opened her heart and home to disadvantaged children. Over the years, she became “Mom” to over 25 pre-adoptive newborns and at-risk children through their teen years, providing love, stability, and hope. She also served children in institutional settings, the Dependent Unit for displaced children, and the Youth Authority for delinquent teens. Later, Lorraine met and married the love of her life, Victor Mario Valdes, and found the large, warm extended family she had longed for. With Victor’s unwavering encouragement, Lorraine returned to college in her 50s to earn her teaching degree from Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth and her certification in English as a Second Language (ESL). She began her teaching career in the Fort Worth Independent School District before joining Erma Nash Elementary in Mansfield, Texas, where she retired as an elementary ESL teacher. Even after retirement, she continued serving others by volunteering as an adult ESL teacher, teaching at Ridge Kids Preschool, sharing her love of learning as a docent at the Fort Worth Zoo, and volunteering for many years at the Mansfield Methodist Thrift Store. Wherever she served, Lorraine was especially drawn to children who needed someone to believe in them.
Lorraine and Victor shared a love of adventure, taking many road trips in their Volkswagen Bug and Volkswagen bus, as well as traveling by bus and train throughout the United States and into Mexico. More than the places they visited, they treasured the people they shared life with. Their home was always open to family and friends for botanas, laughter, lively conversation, and time together. They loved dancing, watching British comedies, and creating memories with those they loved.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Victor Mario Valdes. Lorraine loved God throughout her life, and fully surrendering her life to Jesus at the age of 56 marked a defining chapter in her faith journey. Together, she and Victor were active in their church and believed in sharing God’s love through the way they lived, through kindness, hospitality, compassion, and generosity. Lorraine was deeply grateful for God’s presence in her life and faithfully prayed for her family and friends every day. Lorraine lovingly embraced Victor’s brothers and sisters as her own. She was preceded in death by all but one of her cherished siblings in law and was also dearly loved by her many nieces and nephews, who held a special place in her heart.
She found joy in caring for God’s creation, feeding the birds and keeping a menagerie of mostly rescued animals, including cats, dogs, finches, bunnies, bantam hens, a goat, a ferret, a cockatiel, an iguana, and even kangaroo rats. A gifted seamstress and tailor, Lorraine made everything from a wedding dress to costumes for Las Vegas showgirls and princess dresses for her granddaughters. Lorraine’s lifelong love of coffee began in childhood when her beloved Grandma Dawson introduced her to coffee milk. That simple tradition grew into a lifelong ritual, and in later years, a Starbucks Americano paired with pumpkin bread became a weekly necessity and one of life’s simple pleasures. Her family and friends looked forward to her roasted turkey, traditional Mexican rice, smoothies, and brownies. She delighted in finding a great bargain, looked forward to Black Friday midnight sales, and was a worthy opponent at card games, Bingo, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy! Her greatest legacy is the love she poured into others, her family, the many children whose lives she touched, her students, her friends, and the countless people who were encouraged by her compassion and steadfast faith. She often joked that her biggest disappointment in life, despite her greatest efforts, was that none of her children learned to play the accordion. Lorraine was no ordinary Grandma. She embraced texting and social media to keep up with her grandchildren, celebrating milestones, offering encouragement, and generously sprinkling her messages with emojis. She also enjoyed spending time at the Mansfield Activity Center, where she made many dear friends.
Lorraine is survived by her children, Kenneth and Sandra Heikkila, Lucinda Valdes (late husband Hayden Valdes), Linda and Jim Young, Kether and David Wilson, Abi and Jason Landry, and Keziah and Shane Farrar; and her stepchildren, Victor and Janet Valdes and Chester Valdes. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Caleb, Jacob, Matthew, Wren, Chelsea, Dawson, Barrett, Brandon, Micah, Joshua, Noah, Jade, Adam, China Rose, Titus, Camie, Taryn, Ashton, Neeli, Aidan, Sairi, Zane, Zavin, Landon, Hagan, Brynne, and Madeline; and 33 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held on August 22, 2026, at 2:00p.m. at Blessing Funeral Home in Mansfield, Texas. Those attending the service are invited to wear cheerful colors in celebration of Lorraine’s beautiful life. The family is deeply grateful for the love, prayers, and support shown during this time as they celebrate a life so beautifully lived.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Lorraine’s memory by performing an act of kindness for someone in need, extending the love and generosity she showed so freely.
