Norma Valdez, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, at the age of 61. Born on November 24, 1964, in Portland, Oregon, Norma’s life spanned vibrant chapters, each marked by her generosity, joyful spirit, and unwavering love for her family and community.

Norma was the daughter of John Valdez and Nicolasa Garcia Valdez. She spent her formative years in Salinas, California, where she attended grade schools and nurtured many enduring memories, including the excitement of visiting the premiere of Knots Landing. In her youth, her family embarked on a significant journey, moving to Texas by bus, an experience that shaped her resilience and adaptability.

Her faith journey was a reflection of her evolving spirit; raised within the Catholic tradition, she embraced Baptist teachings and eventually deepened her Christian faith. The Lord’s Prayer was a spiritual touchstone for Norma, guiding her life with grace and strength.

Norma completed her high school education at North Grand Prairie High School, where she graduated before beginning a professional path dedicated to nurturing others. From 1990 to 2001, she was a devoted childcare teacher, investing in the growth and development of young minds. Later, she applied her skills as a machinist at Klein Tools in Mansfield, Texas, from 2014 to 2019. Alongside these vocations, she proudly operated her own small business, a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community.

In 1992, Norma married Lee Edward Nelson, with whom she shared many loving years until his passing. Together, they raised two daughters, Christina Gomez and Linda Rosa Valdez Esquibel, who carry forward her legacy of kindness and perseverance.

Norma’s zest for life was evident in her myriad interests. She delighted in sewing, creating beautiful works that mirrored her meticulous nature and creative soul. Family game nights were brightened by her enthusiasm for Uno cards, and she found joy in spending time on patios and watching boats glide across the lake, moments that brought peace and reflection.

Her personality shone through her generous heart and readiness to help anyone in need. Those who knew Norma remember her as someone who loved to "paint the town red," embracing life with energy and passion. Her laughter and warm spirit were gifts to all who crossed her path.

Norma leaves behind a large and loving family, including her siblings John Valdez Jr., Mary Valdez Gomez, Danny Valdez, Gilbert Valdez, Phillip Valdez, Ernest Valdez, and Tommy Valdez. Her daughters, Christina and Linda Rosa, along with her cherished grandchildren—Johnathan Esquivel, Jacob Gonzalez, Jaden Gonzalez, Evan Esquivel, Danica Gonzalez, Benjamin Rojas, Joseph Esquivel, and Jaxon Esquivel—and great-grandchildren Lorenza and Gabriella Esquivel, carry her memory forward with affection and pride.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Edward Nelson; her parents, John Valdez and Nicolasa Garcia Valdez; paternal grandparents Antonio and Eluteria (Mendez) Valdez; and maternal grandparents Perfecto Garcia and Maria del Rosario.

Norma Valdez’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, faith, resilience, and kindness. She touched countless lives and will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy lives on in her family, her work, and the many hearts she embraced with open arms. May she rest in peace, embraced forever by the love she so generously shared.
