Wanda June Underdown (Turner), known affectionately as “Memaw,” left this world peacefully on December 17, 2025, at the age of 92, surrounded by the love and admiration of her cherished family. Born on January 7, 1933, in Dawson, TX, Wanda was the beloved daughter of Agnes Cook and Raymond Turner. She was the proud sister of Louise Turner, JoAnn Ales, and Gene Turner, all of whom have preceded her in death.
Wanda’s heart was forever intertwined with that of her beloved husband, William Garland Underdown. Their marriage, which began on October 1, 1949, was a beautiful journey that spanned nearly 68 years until his passing in 2017. Together, they built a life that was rich with love and laughter.
In her professional life, Wanda exemplified dedication and passion. She spent ten years at General Dynamics before fulfilling her dream as a Beautician. With her sister-in-law, Geneva Hestilow, she opened a beauty shop on Lancaster Avenue in Fort Worth, a place that became a sanctuary for many. Eventually, she brought the beauty shop home, where she welcomed clients with open arms and a smiling heart. In her later years, she also served at the beauty shop at Huguley Nursing Center, sharing her talent and care with those around her.
Wanda was a woman of many talents and interests. She had a profound love for arts and crafts, and her garden flourished under her nurturing touch. Her passion for her Texas Rangers was evident, and she truly lit up when her family would visit. The joy of caring for her many furry companions brought her immense happiness, while her unshakeable faith in the Lord anchored her spirit throughout her life. A devoted member of Retta Baptist Church for over 40 years, her faith was a light that touched the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
Wanda leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Gerald Underdown, Vicki Underdown, and Jimmy Underdown (Rayann). Her grandchildren—Angela Irwin (Chad), Jennifer Underdown, Ashley Robinson, Jesse Underdown (Sarah), Matthew Robinson (Jody), Reagan Walker (James), and Tanner McGarvey—carry forward her spirit of warmth and kindness. In addition, Wanda was blessed with great-grandchildren: MaKynley, Laidyn, Lily, Zachary, Kori, Benjamin, Nathan, Mason, Bailey, Emersyn, and Abby Jo, who will remember her gentle smile and loving heart.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6th, at Blessing Funeral Home in Mansfield. A celebration of Wanda’s life will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7th, at Retta Baptist Church in Burleson, as family and friends come together to honor the remarkable woman she was.
Memaw, your wings have taken you to a peaceful place, but your love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew you.
